Certified Utility Safety Professional® (CUSP®)

The Certified Utility Safety Professional® (CUSP®) credential is the only program that offers safety credentials designed exclusively for utilities, related contractors, and communication providers. Created, owned, and governed by the Utility Safety & Ops Leadership Network (USOLN), the CUSP designation provides industry-wide professional recognition and validates an individual’s broad knowledge, skills, and leadership abilities within the unique utility work environment. The credential is fully accredited by the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), an independent, third-party validation of the program’s quality and rigor.

What is a CUSP?

A CUSP-certified professional has demonstrated comprehensive expertise in the safety challenges specific to electric, gas, water, and telecommunications utilities. CUSP holders understand high-voltage safety, arc flash hazards, underground utility safety, confined spaces, electrical protective equipment, and the unique regulations that govern utility field operations. This specialized, field-proven knowledge is essential for safety and operations professionals leading teams near utility infrastructure.

CUSP Requirements:

• Experience-Based Eligibility: No prerequisite certifications (such as the ASP) are required. Candidates qualify through one of two experience-driven pathways
• CUSP Green (Safety/Training Management Pathway): A minimum of 3 years (36 months) of utility experience in a dedicated safety or field training leadership role (e.g., Safety Manager, Director, Advisor, or Full-Time Trainer)
• CUSP Blue (Operations Management Pathway): At least 36 months of utility operations leadership experience (e.g., Operations Manager, Crew Lead, Superintendent, Supervisor, or Foreman), including at least 1 year in a role where core safety duties (such as leading tailboards/FLRAs or chairing safety committees) are a documented part of the position
• Base Examination: A 100-question online proctored exam covering core utility safety regulations, hazard identification, incident prevention, human performance, and leadership skills
• Industry Endorsement: At least one specialized 30-question endorsement exam in Transmission & Distribution (T&D), Gas, Power Generation, Civil, or Utility Line Clearance Arborist
