Certified Industrial Hygiene® (CIH®)

Certified Industrial Hygienist® (CIH®)

The Certified Industrial Hygienist® (CIH®) is the premier professional credential in the industrial hygiene field. Administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH), the CIH certification represents the highest level of competency in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace health hazards.

What is a CIH?

A Certified Industrial Hygienist is a professional qualified to assess and control environmental factors and stresses that may cause illness, impair health, or significantly affect worker well-being. CIHs are experts in chemical hazards, indoor air quality, noise exposure, respiratory protection, ventilation design, biological hazards, ergonomics, and regulatory compliance. They apply scientific and engineering principles to protect worker health and ensure regulatory compliance.

Why the CIH Matters for Your Project:

  • Scientific Expertise: CIHs apply rigorous scientific methods to assess exposure hazards and develop effective control strategies
  • Comprehensive Assessments: Qualified to conduct air sampling, noise monitoring, ergonomic evaluations, and complete industrial hygiene surveys
  • Regulatory Authority: CIHs are recognized by OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and other agencies as subject matter experts
  • Problem Solving: Ability to tackle complex exposure scenarios including lead, asbestos, silica, chemical hazards, and indoor air quality issues

CIH Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or related science/engineering field
  • Minimum 5 years of professional industrial hygiene experience
  • Passage of comprehensive examination covering the core areas of industrial hygiene practice
  • Continuing education requirements to maintain certification
